Ten

Xavier

A high pitched whistle, something like a steaming tea pot infiltrates my sleep. I don't wake because for once I don't see a clown or a bat or my death behind my heavy lids. It isn't until the noise goes up a full octave and the sound feels like a stabbing assault on my eardrums that I jerk out of my sleep.

“Ah!” Breathlessly, I yell into the midnight. Nothing but the soft sounds of waves crashing floating in from the balcony fills the darkness in my room. My neck is sweating. My heart is speeding. I squint to see any hint of what the hell made that noise.

“Oh! My! God!” Denise. Of course. Exhaling a tight breath, I calm down. The clock on the nightstand reads twelve twenty-six a.m. “Xavier!” she screams and this time I act.

Quickly, I pull back the covers, jump to my feet. “Denise?” The door that separates our rooms is locked, which is normal at this hour. She doesn't answer my fist pounding. “Denise! Are you okay?” Still nothing. Tucking my elbow in and pushing my shoulder I prepare to bulldoze my way in. With speed and power, I fling back and use the bulk of my deltoid muscle as a sledgehammer to knock the door down.

Except I never hit the door.

I don’t touch it all because right when I linebacker my way in, the door suddenly swings open and I fall face first onto the carpet.

“Xavier!” Denise screams and I swear to God, my head, shoulder, and neck feels like broken glass in a sack of skin. Her wide eyes stare down at me. “Are you okay?”

“No, I'm not okay! What are you in here screaming for?!”

“Look at this!” She shoves the bright screen of her phone in my face. It takes a second for my eyes to focus in the dark and when they do, they roll from annoyance.

A muscled ass? This is why she screams? A picture of a man's ass. A simmering anger shuts me down. Every muscle in my back burns and the possible chiropractor bill I may have to pay to treat this pisses me off more.

Maybe I can be treated at school but what can I tell them? I thought the woman who stayed next door to me at a no-name brand resort was getting robbed so I burst in to save her only to land on my neck and for her to shove porn in my face? “Denise, I know we have done everything together this week, but pornography is where I draw the line.”

“It's not porn! Look!” This time she zooms out. There is more. It's a gossip blog post, a familiar gossip blog. The man's ass is still there but he's standing on the beach facing a woman in a chair. I squint so hard that my brows touch.

I know that umbrella, I know those chairs, I know that woman. “Denise? Is that you?”

“Yes it is! Me, on freaking Tea Bag! Look at the headline!"
